TDC Policy and Legislation

The Transfer of Development Credits tool was enabled Government of Alberta, under the Alberta Land Stewardship Act, and is implemented locally by a municipal government. Understanding how to establish a TDC program therefore means being familiar with the legal and policy dimensions at both the provincial and municipal levels.

This section gives an overview of the enabling provincial statute, and the municipal planning framework. One of the key aspects of that overview is the requirement of the municipality to attain approval from the provincial government for a new TDC program. The Getting Approval section contains information and a checklist that will help a municipality understand both their legal requiremetns, and the best practices they sould apply.
